Default Airtel Broadband redirecting erroneous traffic

I searched regarding this on the forum but found no posts so I thought I'd go ahead.

I accidently noticed today that Airtel Broadband is redirecting the traffic from domain typos, dead links etc. to a partnered website where it displays ads. Seems Airtel is making money off our mistakes.

The website is : ONSPEED Search -

badbadurl.in is just an example. It will work for any dead link as long as your DNS is 202.56.215.55 or 202.56.215.54.

Not some breaking news but I thought I'd just share what I discovered.

heh verisign was kicked very hard when they did it for .com domains. sadly we have no idea where to complain... in this specific case.

Airtel Broadband redirecting non-working domains to self hosted ad filled page!

ok cool. this should at least get this into google news.

Well I had already done my bit by posting this same news and a screenshot on my personal blog :

After that I decided to check out the forum and see if anyone else had seen something similar. I needed for this news to get out so I decided the best place to discuss is IBF. Had never thought of the Verisign angle.

I had previously also been noticing the Airtel DNS redirecting me to websites on its own. Like, if if just typed "lifehacker" in the address bar it would not give an error but instead take me to lifehacker.in. ".in" seems to be their fav.

I once tried something by the name of DNSadvantage... found it to be faster than OpenDNS but had fewer options.

No it isnt at my end.. rapidshare works fine.
But this onspeedsearch advertising is really irritating.

i am sure if ppl dont object to this then other ISPs will follow the same too.

also how reliable airtel DNS servers be? as s.ricky pointed it may already be failing to find rapidshare and hence taking him to wrong page.

Well I checked again and at this point of time the Airtel DNS servers are not redirecting to onspeedsearch and I'm getting the normal address not found error in my browser. Either they read this post or it was something they were testing.
