would take some time and effort.

basically you need to call in and apply for disconnection.

you might get a chance to speak with the retention department which should be an amusing experience.

then you have to ensure that you pay all the pending dues to the company and return all the stuff you have to return.

and keep calling in regularly for a couple of weeks to ensure that they do disconnect your connection from their backend.

this is how i did it.

So tell us what's a good alternative for a Freedom 2999 Chennai subscriber. In this plan, speed is 2 mbit, Fair Usage Policy is 100 gb and the speed only decreases to 1 mbit if ever Fair Usage Policy gets triggered. I am accustomed to 2mbit. It will suck to go down now.

BSNL - I used to have BSNL and the exchange near my place is good. In 2002, when I booked a new connection, the line men brought the line to my home in one hour after I booked the connection. But, those were the days of 256 kbps and I am not sure about the quaility of their technical service. They offer 2 Mbps upto 50 GB, 256 kbps beyond 50 GB for INR 2999. That's an inferior plan when compared to Airtel Freedom 2999 and the very mention of 256 kbps turns me off.

Tata Indicom - I don't know much about this provider but I think the feedback about them is not positive. Infinity 1Mbps SYM PLUS plan offers 1 mbit with a Fair Usage Policy of 150gb for INR 2950. Infinity 2.5 Mbps PLUS offer 2.5 mbit with a Fair Usage Policy of 200 gb for INR 5000. I don't know what the speed will go down to after Fair Usage Policy come into play. Again, these plans does not sound economically feasible when compared to Airtel.

Reliance - As with Tata, I don't know much about this provider either. I am not even sure if they will be able to give me a connection. They seem to have a 2mbps plan for INR 2599 and I don't see any Fair Usage Policy.

Considering all the factors, sticking to the current plan with Airtel seems sensible.

Which is the best alternative to Airtel?

in your case, sticking with your existing connection. the same policy i am taking right now.

do not get lured into changing to any other pack. it's going to be a trap!

i guess i did good moving to 1mbps 24x7 plan a couple of months ago. i am myself going to pay 1899 for this iptv plan.

tata seems to have a Fair Usage Policy on all of their wired broadband plans outside mumbai i believe.

Same here. Infact I was the one who kept on calling those Airtel people (for 6 months!) to come and install their stuff in our society so that I could enjoy uninterrupted broadband. Before Airtel, I was on BSNL (back in 2008). BSNL used to go down every other day. ...and Airtel? - It's been a year on Airtel broadband and total downtime in this year was 2-3 hours.
Conclusion: I have no plans of disconnecting Airtel broadband unless BSNL gets their act together and starts offering some real uptime and customer service.

Reliance people used to regularly visit my place and used to convince me how their broadband service is better than the rest. I'm glad I didn't fall for their words and stayed away from their offers and connection.

No, I won't be changing to any of the new plans. Since they were not gonna upgrade/double the speeds for the Freedom 2999 plans, I considered switching to Freedom 1699 plan earlier this month to avail 2mbit at a lesser price. But, once I knew that the new plans are going to have a Fair Usage Policy of 40 gb and a speed of 256 kbps beyond that, I decided to stick with the current plan.

It sucks to think that the broadband 'revolution' started with 256 kbps in 2005 and 5 years later in 2010, we are stuck with 2 mbit if we need unmetered bandwidth.

i have had three different connections of airtel broadband at my place. got 2 disconnected once 512k-1m speeds were cheap enough.

I agree that I am satisfied with their service. In my long Airtel experience, the speed has been good as promised, the connection has been mostly stable. The customer service might not be knowledgeable but they forward the complaints and I get prompt service 99% of the time.

The Fair Usage Policy in the new plans suck and the pricing is high but that seems to be the case with all major ISPs. So, I guess it's better to stay married to the existing evil than to venture into unknown waters.

I'll switch only when Hayai comes. Till then Airtel is the best as I have no Fair Usage Policy on my plan!

Airtel dropped my speed in April after sometime. Having called the CCare, I was told I had crossed 100GB, which shocked me initially. The speed stayed at 512kbps, having dropped from 1mbps, till the first day of my monthly billing cycle. This is horrible and with the new FUPs announcement, it seems my good customer care impression of Airtel is the only hangon reason for being with Airtel, which is going to change NOW! Airtel sucks in the name of broadband. Sunil Mittal could have earned a name for giving the people real broadband by giving higher speeds at the same costs, instead of luring people in the name of Free Upgrades, which was actually meant for already low speed subscribers only. I am checking for an alternative like Hayai in Gurgaon. Other options are as bad. It is terrible that we are going back in time instead of moving forward with such Fair Usage Policy and price moves. To hell with AIRTEL and their new policies. Also, TRAI has not clarified its stance on FUPs and keeps mum about it. If Hayai had its equipment in place, they would have immedietly got loyal customers at this Airtel shift. Shame that Hayai(meaning FAST in Japanese), has been OSOI!(SLOW, in Japanese!!). Will take the 4mbps speed of Hayai if they launched it around Rs.2200 or so.

I took mtnl 1 mbps connection in march, I had two airtel connections , got both plans changed to Rs 250 rental plan through airtel retention dept and also got 3 months rental waived of on both connections. After three months now yesterday i applied for disconnection of one connection, i am keeping the other connection because all my friends and relatives know that telephone number.
