Airtel is authorized to unlock Apple iPhones in India?

we have covered this in the past.

apple site states that airtel is authorized to unlock iphones.

    but would they?

    i doubt they would.

they have no reasons to offer unlocking codes to people in india.

there is no law or regulation forcing them to do so.

I think Airtel will be unlocking iPhones more than a year with them. Reason is, they have not subsidised the phone in India, like say ATT did in the States, and so they have no right to hold back the customer to their network for longer.

but who is stopping them from NOT doing that?

there is NO regulation by TRAI on locked phones for indian customers.

in fact there is a regulation in the USA and mobile companies i believe are supposed to provide unlock codes after the contract is over. at&t i think still does not provide any unlock code to the owners of first generation iphones.

here in india, why would airtel do such a thing when trai does not even care about locked phones in the country.

iphone is in fact not the first phone to be sold locked in india. vodafone magic box is locked i believe. so are most HTC phones sold by Airtel or Vodafone. or Blackberry devices sold by reliance/tata/airtel/vodafone.

i dont see airtel taking an initiative. no one is forcing them to.

Initially all HTC phones came with locked and was usable only with Airtel. But in recent times they are even selling them unlocked.

Since this post is about BSNL and iPhones. I want to ask a question. Is anybody using BSNL 3G with their iPhones? Did you have any problems configuring 3G on the iPhone? I am a little concerned since BSNL doesnot have the greatest CC in the World
Also what plan do you think is good enough, if you are only going to use the 3G connection for simple Navigation applications and maybe checking emails (basic text with out multimedia content). and maybe a messenger serivce like yahoo.
I was thinking about getting 3G base plan which is 250Rs for 300Mb. Do you guys this this would be enough?

    Here are the 3G plans.

    Please Advice.

apple iphone is more about the software powering it than the hardware components.

hardware is easy to replicate. but not the software.

    I am Sad now

Ok apparently I must have had the wrong number which I got from MTNL website. I called this other number which I saw in one of the posts here, which connected me to Kolkata, I was very happy to talk to this guy who's English was good, also he gave me a number for haryana.
I called CC here, choose the english language - Got connected to a Haryanavi Babu. lol
Anyway with much effort He confirmed that He had information that Iphone 3G is supported, (Obviously , its "3G")
Anywho this is for anyone else who needs similar information, If anyone can still help me out with the information I require about the plan being suitable for me, it will be appreciated.

So you mean iPhone can work with BSNL 3G,according to that CC guy,but how?
Is this after unlocking, but that isn't happening as far as i hear.So how in the hell is BSNL's 3G work on iPhone

As for your plan,go with lowest, and work your way up if not satisfied.
If Rs 250 plan doesn't suit you, maybe afterwards you can upgrade to the 400 and 1 gb free usage one.37% price increase for thrice the free usage amount.
