3G connection is in testing phases. BSNL has not launched the service commercially anywhere. What they provide is the 3g SIM with a 2g GSM plan? Once the commercial launch occurs you will might get information on how to active 3g on your mobile.

In Chennai the commercial launch in around April 20th and the 3g SIMs were available since January. So I expect the commercial launch in these cities around the same time.

According to expressindia.com :

BSNL has launched 3G Mobile Services on Friday on commercial basis simultaneously from 11 cities -- Agra, Ambala, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Dehradoon, Shimla, Lucknow, Ranchi, Durgapur, Haldia, Patna & a soft launch in Jammu.

What is "soft" launch ?

3G has already been commercially launched.though it may take a week at max for the 3G sim cards to reach the mass market.
like i was told 2day that i wud get a sim on the 5th.

Like I said before SIM cards are available in Chennai from January. That doesn't mean that 3g service is available. You can still use the 3g SIM for 2g GSM.

I don't know about other locations, but in Chennai the 3g transmitters are in the process of being deployed and will get completed only in April end.

I did get the 3G sim but the services are still not on, after banging my head with the tech people and the call center now they are saying that the sim is faulty and that I will have to wait for another couple of day sfor the replacement sim to arrive.....
