I don't know what security they are taking about. These are the guys who didn't know how to decode an unencrypted VOIP packets during the 26/11 attack. Took the help of FBI!

Once DoT even wanted Blackberry to downgrade their superior 128 bit encryption!

Today I bought a bsnl pre-paid 3g sim card from the bsnl office at dehradun. I did not opt for a voice plan as the tariff list at bsnl website says that if you opt for data plan, then base voice and sms plan would apply. paid 300 for the sim. I wanted to opt for the 1 gb data plan which costs 400 per month. the bsnl office did not have the data plan voucher. they asked me to visit a bsnl franchise to buy a data plan voucher. I asked him the dial-up number in order to connect to the internet using my 3g phone and laptop. He said that there was no need of a dial-up number. The 3g would be always on. Now how on earth was this possible? How can a computer know what number to dial to connect to the internet? I asked him if he could show me how to connect. He obliged and clicked on an icon on the desktop to connect to the internet. Guys, incidentally this was the dial-up shortcut which some computer guy at bsnl must have set up for this idiot to use. I clicked on the properties tab and voila! There was the number **99***4# I told him that this was the number I was asking you and tell others too the same. The guy was obviously red-faced.

I went to a bsnl franchise and expectedly discovered that the franchise had NEVER HEARD of a data plan voucher!!! he called up some bsnl officer and handed the phone to me to fend for myself. I asked the officer if a voice plan was necessary if I wanted to avail a data plan? he said , yes it was necessary. he asked me to go for the super350 voice pre-paid plan and then after recharging my number, go for any of the data plan desired. so what he meant to say was that after paying 300 for the sim, pay another 350 for voice and then pay a minimum of 250 for the least expensive "MBV250" data plan. a total of 900! he also said that currently data plan vouchers are not available in the city and he would enquire about them the same evening. I took his number and disconnected the phone. I asked the bsnl franchise whether he had ever checked the tariff web page at bsnl website. he obviously said no and that explained why he had no clue about the data plan vouchers. he also said to me that he was given “training” based on some papers provided by bsnl. I asked if the papers did not mention the data plans. he replied sheepishly that the data plans were indeed mentioned but he had not gone through all the papers yet. I came back home. This idiot, a bsnl franchise, is unaware of his own products that he can sell.

I inserted the sim into my nokia 6233 mobile ( a 3G phone). when I switched it on, it showed no signals. the sim had not been activated yet (unlike airtel/vodafone/idea where the sim is activated within minutes upon purchase). after waiting for 4 hours for the activation, I called bsnl customer care at 1503. They said that the sim would be activated in 24 hrs and not in 2 hours as told me by the officer at the bsnl office from where I purchased the sim. Then I inquired him about the data plans and at first he asked me to goto the bsnl office/franchise for the information. then why the hell was he at the customer care taking calls in the first place if he had no information? when I told him that the bsnl office and the franchise had no clue, he held me up for 2 minutes (obviously to ask his superiors). he came back and said that it was not necessary to take a voice plan along with a data plan. just purchasing the sim and buying a data plan voucher, would be sufficient. He asked me to meet the circle officer and tell him to make available data plan vouchers.

Just like that, when I asked him what was the dial up number in order to connect to the internet using my 3g phone and laptop, he asked what "dial-up" meant! The phone got disconnected. I re-dialed and this time it was somebody else. He too was unaware of the dial-up number! But he atleast gave me the access point that was to be set in my mobile if I wanted to surf the internet on my mobile itself. It is gprsnorth3g.bsnlmobile.in

I am amazed that a telecom giant like bsnl has recruited such fools and idiots as their frontlines who are to deal with customers. Although airtel/vodafone/idea customer service is not world class but still they are hundred times better than bsnl. Can you believe that there is no portal where you can check the data usage of your bsnl 3g connection? In the faq list of bsnl 3G, nowhere it is mentioned the dial-up number and the access point! I am still waiting for my sim card to get activated. Will keep you guys updated. Please pray for me.

Actually, before starting some new technology BSNL should give proper technical and customer care training to their employees particualrly those who do field work.

I have found that customer care even in a big city like Panchkula,Chandigarh is almost non existent.

Actually the guy who is supposed to do the field work in our area almost always keeps his mobile "switched off" !

On the other hand if one opts for Airtel they too have some unfair policies.

Reliance is coming with plug and surf broadband option which they claim is the fastest. But here too the usb modem or card has to be bought even if one uses their service temporarily !

Now where should the customer go ?

The only good thing about BSNL is it's broadband service.

    Best of luck!
