its all your choice, there is a log which is maintained by the ISP about your browsing activities. But since its not illegal to visit such sites you can do what pleases you![]()
I would like to know whether I can browse / download from "x" sites.
Due to the thundering speed of Dataone I just can not resist. But I am restricting myself from not visiting such sites.
Can anybody tell me whether it will be ok or I should continue my restrictions.
With regards.
Balu.

Are you sure ? . As I understand, they only record the usage timings, for billing purposes. And some web sites could have been blocked.there is a log which is maintained by the ISP about your browsing activities.

Welcome to Broadbandforum.in
Apart from the thundering speed, you are likely to get a "thundering bill', if you
surf video sites! as you are likely to exceed your usage quota. If freeNU is available, no problem.
The websites you visit , will like to create "cookies" . If you give any personal details/email etc, you are likely to get all sorts of adult spam mail.
Secure your computer with AV/Antispy/Firewall like ZA.
To delete the visited web sites record off your computer , daily run
ccleaner from filehippo.com. Select erase method more than one pass.
try Recuva ( to recover deleted files) to test whether the web site references are fully erased.
yes essebebe i'm certain that browsing log are made and kept for atleast few days, if not weeks. They have information like list of all URLs visited by you. May also have information of files names downloaded. Though what data exchange took place is not available. For eg: Whatever a person entered on a particular website. Browsing secure webpages has always been safe from prying eyes. ;)
I do think there are some encryption/proxy based solutions available to reduce the amount of traces you leave behind.
One example of a website stealing yor browsing history.
Spyjax - Your browser history is not private!
(Not the same as your ISP!)

will wait for further feedback.
How long they keep the record is also doubtful.
If as you say , they do record the web sites you visit, the case where an innocent
software engineer, was wrongly implicated /arrested etc, by mistake because of time difference in the usage log, would not have happened. I think tracking was done within a short span of time. ( some offensive remarks in a Blog)
What the ISP can say was who was on line at a particular time. ( like cellphones)
For instance if you send me an email, I can trace your location. upto ISP location only.
Thereafter ISP has to give details about you.
Adult web sites trace your IP ( of the ISP)immediately .
An Indian web site also records your IP, if you wish to send any comments to them.
or reply to others comments. or about any article or news.
This will be same as "tapping" everybody's phone line , without court order.
Yes, Airtel is just logging your history and not checking it, otherwise there would have been some casualties.:p
B/W what have you been doing online?![]()

saw the link you have given. This thread is also included now !
The question is
(a) Is this done by an ISP with millions of internet users Or
(b) a web site or websites, who want to monitor your surfing pattern ?
I have mentioned, that Adult sites will do it, and other "vegetarian' sites will check what is the response to their different web contents !
essbebe,
No such things are not done by the ISP. The ISP has a log of which website a particular IP visited at what time.
Once they have the IP they have the User ID which got that IP assigned after being authenticated.
I don't think the indian ISPs are good enough to really track on anyones particular identity. It takes experts to go through logs of ones browsing activity in order to understand a persons usual routine and then identify him. I will tell you my experience by which i was made aware of this. One of my friends had a spectranet connection about 5 yrs back from his local provider who was only about 100 yards away from his place.
We were browsing through all sorts of websites, as the internet was running a bit slow my friend and i walked over to the providers office and told him that the speed was too slow. So he took us to where his server was, asked us the name of site which was slow. Naturally being embarrased we said everything was slow.
So this guy starts to show a long list of the websites we had just browsed through 5 mins back, turns towards us says "so these are the sites which are slow". We could only give embarassed smiles back. He did increase the speed a bit for us as my friend had only a 64K connection. Going by this experience and 5yrs of upgrade in technology i wont be surprised if ISPs dont have a track of the websites visited by its customers.
