1.
using PPPoE dialer
2.
using inbuilt Modem dialer
1. in case 1, your modem will simply act as a modem and not block ports
for you and hence no security.
the procedure required for this kind of thing is given in detail at
http://www.calcuttatelephones.com/dataoneinstall/menu.html
you need to download the PPPoE dialer for win98, and also the PATCH for
the PPPoE dialer for win98, both are given on the above site. read the
instructions given there and you are ready.
2 in case 2, your modem will act as a router blocking most of the ports.
many experts recommend this router action.
in this way, you need to set your lan card some IP addresses,
first do
http://192.168.1.1 to access your router
(if you have not changed it)
and then in there goto WANsettings,
in that select PPP, connection type : PPPoE,
enter your dataone username and password,
click APPLY, save,and the modem will restart in 2 minutes.
now you need to configure your network card settings.
right click network neighbour hood > properties,
then select your LAN card's TCP/IP Properties,
in there enter the following :
IP address : 192.168.1.2 (can be anything in the range 192.168.1.*)
but except your routers IP )
subnet : 255.255.255.0
gateway : 192.168.1.1 ( ip address of your router)
dns1 : 61.1.96.69
dns 2 : 61.1.96.71
click APPLY, OK, it will ask you to reboot your PC,
and after the reboot, you will have internet
whenever you switch-on your modem . [/b]
