This could be a possibility - by HR people, I specifically meant headhunters, not really Human Resources per se.

I feel a lot of people are in their jobs in this country because it's what Mum and Dad wanted - not necessary because they are actually competent.

I want people in my organization to be passionate about what they do. Although if my accountant isn't exactly enthused about being hunched over a calculator all day, I wouldn't entirely blame him/her ;)

    Dear MG

I read your thread . I must say the original policies you have made are better then any other person's suggestion here. With due respect to the other posters i feel sorry ,if they feel offended.
Only one thing I can suggest you on a personal level , that is maintaining a friendly relation with the employees.
Trust me even if your employees are novoice people, they will improve themselves a lot without ur intervention if they feel you are caring about them.
Once again i will say the policies you have made are wonderful. I do not feel any major change should be done in them. Instead of giving them 4 days workweek, try to give them holidays in other forms, like accumelated leave etc. In this way you can both increase the moral and productivity of employees.

Anyways whats your plan to come to punjab. I have not got any single post of urs where u mentioned you will expand your business to punjab region too. secondly few of my IT friends would like to join your company. Can I ask how can they apply in your company, I mean through mail or something.

    regards

Thanks. I tend to try and only hire the best people to begin with - I want my customers to be dealing with bright, competent people, so our hiring process may be a little more rigorous than many companies.

I tend to treat people as they are, and I'm not usually one to vent my frustrations to others. I would hope that my employees find me to be a likable person to work for and work with. People are a very important part of the organization, and treating employees better tends to foster an atmosphere whereby people don't want to leave: and this is a good way to cut expenses, believe it or not!

As far as holidays go, things like accumulated holidays are standard procedure to me. Perhaps such things are not so common in India, but as far as I'm concerned, 2-3 weeks of holidays per year is normal. A 4-day workweek just keeps people fresher than they otherwise might be: fresh people, better productivity... et cetera. I've had the joy of working in several countries with varying work-weeks and I think I enjoyed the lifestyle in the Mediterranean region most.

Providing services in Punjab would be subject to things like demand, feasibility, politics - you name it, we have to consider it. We would like to be in every city in India in the next few years.

If people are looking to join the company, we will be opening a job portal at hayai.co.in whereby they can post their CV, otherwise for now they can send an email to careers [at] hayai [dot] in with their desired job-title in the subject header.

No worries. We're mostly after technical people at the moment, rather than software developers.

Having worked for a few years in silicon valley (california) , I never understood the rationale behind putting in 10+ hours a day and adding weekends in there (working here in Bombay) -- it never upped my productivity.

On the contrary, I believe that, minus distractions, a 6-8 hour work day can equal or better the longer working hours.

Until I am based in Bombay, yeah I would be up for a position with you guys. I suppose you'll post the specs for the skill set when you get into any development.

Software Development is one of those unfortunate jobs where working long hours can "just happen" - whether by tight deadlines or by accident. Been there, done it, got the t-shirt.

There have been times that my girlfriend of the time has got very annoyed with me for coming home late or ignoring her because I was working at home.

Sadly, it's also not a profession that is regulated or valued like being a plumber or an electrician. This allows stuff like this to happen.

Probably the closest thing to coders we'll have to hire in the near future are Sysadmins. So yes, some of our staff are on 4-day weeks.

    Sadly ?!?

No, not sadly, one hopes this profession will never ever be ruined by regulation. Not happy with it, quit! or look elsewhere. You, obviously have.

The day this profession gets regulated is the day the jobs run away from India to the next unregulated destination, sending all the investment countless ppl have made into the drain.

There's a lot wrong with the post - by regulation, I don't necessarily mean government regulation, I mean just regulation as far as certifications etc are concerned. This might surprise you, but on average, you average registered nurse gets better pay and better treated by his/her employer than any computer grunt. Likewise with plumbers and electricians. Maybe not so much in India, but certainly in the rest of the world.

We will always need programmers and hardware guys and technicians of varying degrees, but if we had more reliable certification processes and so forth, we could weed out probably 75% of the useless fluff (people) who have diplomas worth exactly nothing.

And trust me on this - setting up a business in India is a complete bitch - especially for a non-Indian - irrespective of field.
