@mgc: do you have technical people looking into potential issues such as the ones you can expect to face with plans like BSNL's 8 mbps in this post: BSNL Broadband 8mbps plan

I have a feeling, regular non-techie users may not get best results unless they start playing around with their OS network tuning settings

BTW, I know you posted lots of speed results, but in summary do you at least get close to 100 mbps (say at least 90 - 95 MBps) downloads in "hayai zone" in your OS / download tools (forget bittorrent, what about direct http download internally?) without the need for tuning? I know external downloads were pretty slow (30 mbps, some cases under 10 mbps) I am sure those can be improved by a combination of tuning and also selecting the best geographic region to download from - for example France servers work best for me at the moment...

It's already mindblowing, so I hope I end up with even faster downloads at same/less price
Well, 50GB per month comes in at far less than 2799... so... yeah, you should get faster with more for less.

For standard usage, no tweaking *should* be required up to 100Mbit/s. Some users might want to tweak their MTUs and so forth but to be frank this shouldn't be required on XP SP2 or later.

Naturally, we run a few basic tests during installation to make sure the network is doing what we want it to.

It really does depend on where you download from - we can pull 80-100Mbit/s from Microsoft or Apple or Nvidia and so forth no sweat - other servers might have limitations on them since they might be shared or in a country that doesn't have fantastic internet.

You would also notice from mirrors.hns.net.in we were getting about 11Mbyte/s, which is pretty close to 100Mbit/s. If I had been on a machine that was connected to a Gigabit switch, it would have come through at about 800Mbit/s (so I am told).

As the "Hayai Zone" increases, so will you be able to download from more sites at faster speeds - and without eating in to your bandwidth caps (where applicable). We have filed an application to host a Sourceforge mirror, we are waiting on an Akamai box (which will mirror Apple and others), and I think most Google-ish things (including Youtube) will go through our 1Gbit/s direct peer with Google.

Generally speaking, in the Hayai Zone, you should get very close to 100Mbit/s or even more in some cases. The computer I used for those tests was not tuned to the best of my knowledge, and if it was, it wasn't tuned by me.

I want to run even more tests with some brand-new completely open pipes to show what we really can get from outside of India as soon as I am able to.

More than 2 months after the launch. I am still waiting for the actual review by a genuine paying customer. Hope all is well with Hayai.

Hayai has taken a big step backwards in Feb. Neither the website is up, nor MgCarley is around here with any news. Sad.

One thing I'm curious about is if Hayai is still paying for the leased bandwidth. If there are no customers, and connections aren't going live, then who would shell out $33,000 or more per month for the international bandwidth? Hmm.

Yes, for that I must apologize. I had to leave the country because, well... foreigner. New rules, regulations etc. Some good has come of it, however, and I have been able to test the internet situation in other developing countries so that I can bring the knowledge back to India.

Such is the joy of VC money. Rollout has been agonizingly slow, so I have decided that we will also offer a copper based connection, which will also come with a cheaper plan price. The speed will still be "up to 100Mbit/s", but we will only provide assurance of up to 50Mbit/s on it - even though it should do 70 or 80 mbit/s most of the time.

What's the point of providing copper based connections? Just go for the best and in time it will be for the better...

well copper wires are cheaper and i guess installation is easier. so they can expand the availability of their services. wiring can be enhanced progressively.
