this can actually happen....if one manages to crack all root servers at same time. very unlikely though.

yes but all data loss is not possible.

and i am sure people running the base of the internet have backups... and off shore servers no matter how much more it is costing them!

global economies will crash if the internet crashes.

Root servers crashing would result in the entire DNS structure being down..but of course data scattered acroos servers globally would still be there..BTW ..Who are these people running the root servers ? who r they answerable to ?

Level 3 Communications - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia looks to be one of them...

The company operates one of the largest communications and Internet backbones in the world.

Root servers crashing wont crash the internet. The internet infrastructure will function normally, as usual. DNS is cached at SO MANY LEVELS that root servers crashing wont affect it much. By the time the root servers come back online, people wouldn't even have noticed anything like this happening ;)

The root servers are run by the following: VeriSign, University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute, Cogent Communications, University of Maryland, NASA's Ames Research Center, Internet Systems Consortium, US Dept. of Denfence's Network Information Center, US Army Research Lab, Autonomica Sweden, RIPE, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) & WIDE Japan. Level3 doesn't manage or run any of the root servers of the net.

You didn't get the point. If a big international backbone provider goes down then a lot of people will be disconnected all over the world. Whats the point of having root servers running if nobody can reach them??
