good morning. i tried mandriva one 2008.0 just now at 730am. and it sucks, like pclinuxos and fedora it has pretty graphics/theme though like most modern distros.

on booting the live cd an nvidia logo shows up which indicates it detected/installed drivers, cool.

then it starts off the dumb setup questions again like pclinuxos instead of going straight to the desktop.

india is not present in the countries list to select

it then asks for desktop effects to be enabled, 2 options, "metisse" and "compiz fusion", metisse has translucent aero-glass like windows, compiz fusion has wobbly windows which work on this kde, doesnt seem to work for me with opensuse's kde

at least it didnt ask for login/user/password like fedora/pclinuxos and logged into the desktop automatically.

again, like pclinuxos its not as simple as it seems, again there are 2 control areas, a "configure your system" and another "control center" which is for kde.

the collection of apps is good as is expected with kde plus gimp, openoffce, firefox.

flash worked in the live session, althogh trying to play an AAC stream it popped up a dialog asking to install codecs which crashed when i clicked it.

i played with the wobbly windows and rotating 3d desktop for some time then powered off.

so in conclusion, dont bother with mandriva unless you want to be spammed by them asking to purchase their professional version

Look, vishalrao, I agree that the things being asked for on boot in PCLOS are dumb It's lame, and Texstar have recieved their share of criticism for it. But saying "PCLOS sucks" just because of this is not right. Look in terms of user friendliness, look from the eyes of a Windows addict. The control center tries to emulate the Windows Control Panel, but provides a lot more powerful features than it. KDE is highly customised, and if you look at the default settings, they have been fine tuned for ease of use and a systematical, hierarchial management.

It has gui apps for almost everything. redo-mbr is a cool gui tool, that can be used from the live cd to restore your GRUB after a Windows installation. You can edit the xorg.conf, fstab and all other config files, without actually opening them or knowing what they are, or even if they exist. ntfs-config and the PCLOS control center take care of that.

Overall, what matters in a distro is the question that - "Can I use thins thing for 6 months straight without any problems? Can I turn this into a power packed desktop experience?"

If the answer is yes, then go ahead and have fun! That distro is PCLOS for me!

    Dude Vishalrao,

Lets just avoid words like "it sucks". This would avoid a distro war. Different people look at different things in a distro. For me Ubuntu isnt as "Linux for human beings" as it claims to be. But thats my opinion.

i hope you realise that whenever i (or anyone for that matter) say something sucks, i shouldn't have to keep adding IMO or IMHO or IMNSHO etc, it should be implicit.

of course i was talking about my own opinion of these distros and im well aware what sucks for me works superbly for others.

another communication gap which many people face everyday in different scenarios (especially work life) and should be aware of is that when i say "pclinuxos sucks" i am saying just that. i am not saying "you suck because you use pclinuxos". people often get offended because they assume that. one classic example mentioned in communication training (for work) is that when someone proposes an idea and someone calls that idea "dumb", it is made clear that it is the IDEA that is dumb not the person who proposed it

so, no, i dont think anyone should avoid any words, not even "it sucks". because "it sucks" means "it sucks" not "you suck". capiche?

dang, i used the word "suck" so many times in this single post already will try to control it from now on.

so students, i hope today's short essay on communication skills was helpful

Can we just discuss the distros instead of 'communication skills'.

    heh (IMO) ;)

There's one really important point (IMO) on which PCLinuxOS is lacking behind Ubuntu, as I noticed today and which gave me a lot of trouble, is that when Ubuntu is installed on a system after installin a multiple OS's on other partitions, the Ubuntu GRUB detects all the OS's and lists them automatically whereas the PCLinuxOS needs virtual spoonfeeding and all kinds of info like boot points and Kernel Image have to be filled in.

vishal you sure don't miss a single opportunity to mop pclinuxos . But since this is your own opinion i don't understand why others are getting heated .
