Default BJP IT Vision promises 2mbps for Rs. 200

So we know that elections are coming. Among a lot of things various parties are promising, BJP has come out with an interesting vision document:

    Some of the promises include:

National Digital Highway Development Project to create India's Internet backbone, and Pradhan Mantri Digital Gram Sadak Yojana for last-mile access even in the remotest of villages.

Broadband Internet (2 Mbps) in every town and village, at cable TV prices (less than Rs 200/month).

All schools and colleges to have Internet-enabled education.
100% financial inclusion through bank accounts, with e-Banking facilities, for all Indian citizens. Direct transfer of welfare funds, preferably to the woman of the house.

Every BPL family to be given a free smart mobile phone, which can be used by even illiterate users for accessing their bank accounts.

Number of mobile subscribers to be increased from 40 crore at present to 100 crore in five years. Internet users to equal mobile subscribers. India to equal China in every IT parameter in five years.

Video conferencing to be made affordable and universally accessible.

Primary Health Centre in every village to be linked to the National Telemedicine Service Network. Basic health insurance scheme for every citizen, using the IT platform. Cashless hospitalisation.

India’s ranking in the United Nations’ Human Development Index, which is currently 128, to be improved to 50 in five years, with the long-term objective of bringing India within Top Twenty by 2020.

Massive expansion in the use of IT in agriculture, rural development, SMEs, retail trade, and informal and unorganised sectors of the economy.

National e-Governance Plan to cover every Government office from the Centre to the Panchayats. The ‘E Gram Vishwa Gram’ scheme, launched by Shri Narendra Modi in Gujarat, to be implemented nationwide.

All post offices to be converted into IT-enabled Multi-Service Outlets. All telephone booths to be upgraded to Internet kiosks.

Citizens will have a simple 1-800 BSNL Toll Free Number, which will be accessible 24x7x 365 days of the year, to contact their Member of Parliament.

    Unlimited VoIP access to all

e-Bhasha: National Mission for Promotion of IT in Indian Languages.
Special focus to bring women, SC/STs, OBCs and other weaker sections of society within the ambit of IT-enabled development.

Use of IT for the protection of India’s priceless cultural and artistic heritage.

Government to standardise on ‘open standard’ and ‘open source’ software.

Domestic IT hardware industry to be aggressively promoted to minimise dependence on imports.

Domestic hosting industry to be promoted to minimise international bandwith charges.

An independent body, Digital Security Agency (DSA), to be set up for cyber warfare, cyber counter-terrorism, and cyber security of national digital assets.

At least there is a political party that has a vision when it comes to telecom and IT. If they can do even a few things out of so many promised, our country will be much better off in terms of connectivity.

Compare this with incompetent moron A. Raja that we have as telecom minister in present government.

As on today, BJP is the only party talking about deployment of broadband in remote parts of our country. Needless to say BJP has won the votes of my family.

Vote for Congress, if you want to continue to surf internet at upto 256 kbps with Fair Usage Policy for another 5 years.

2mbps for 200 is not a big deal if they do not talk about the data transfer limits.

no one talks about quality of services.

i bet the document was prepared to impress voters like us.

National Digital Highway Development Project to create India's*Internet*backbone, and Pradhan Mantri Digital Gram Sadak Yojana for last-mile access even in the remotest of villages.*

India's Internet Backbone... Last Mine Access... BSNL would probably be responsible. And we all know how responsible they are.

Broadband*Internet*(2 Mbps) in every town and village, at*cable TV prices*(less than Rs 200/month).*

With 100 MB data transfer limit?

All schools and colleges to have Internet-enabled education.*
100% financial inclusion through bank accounts, with e-Banking facilities, for all Indian citizens. Direct transfer of welfare funds, preferably to the woman of the house.*

    Blah blah blah...

Every BPL family to be given a free smart mobile phone, which can be used by even illiterate users for accessing their bank accounts.*

    Blah blah blah...

Number of mobile subscribers to be increased from 40 crore at present to 100 crore in five years.*Internet*users to equal mobile subscribers. India to equal China in every IT parameter in five years.

100 crores internet users in India? Maybe if they count everyone with a mobile (capable of WAP based internet connectivity) as an internet user.

Video conferencing to be made affordable and universally accessible.*

    BSNL again.

Primary Health Centre in every village to be linked to the National Telemedicine Service Network.*Basic health insurance*scheme for every citizen, using the IT platform. Cashless hospitalisation.*

    Blah blah...

India’s ranking in the United Nations’*Human Development Index, which is currently 128, to be improved to 50 in five years, with the long-term objective of bringing India within Top Twenty by 2020.*

    Blah Blah...

Massive expansion in the use of IT in agriculture, rural development, SMEs, retail trade, and informal and unorganised sectors of the economy.*

    Blah Blah...

National e-Governance Plan to cover every Government office from the Centre to the Panchayats. The ‘E Gram Vishwa Gram’ scheme, launched by Shri Narendra Modi in Gujarat, to be implemented nationwide.*

    Blah Blah...

All post offices to be converted into IT-enabled Multi-Service Outlets. All telephone booths to be upgraded to*Internet*kiosks.*

Let us first concentrate on getting government officials to behave like human beings and not like gods. How many of post office officials are really IT enabled?

Citizens will have a simple 1-800 BSNL*Toll Free Number, which will be accessible 24x7x 365 days of the year, to contact their Member of Parliament.*

So, what would I do if the MP of my city is not going to do anything about my calls? Delivery of message is not a big deal.

    Unlimited VoIP access to all*

BSNL would go on a nationwide strike. What would you do?

e-Bhasha: National Mission for Promotion of IT in Indian Languages.*

    Blah Blah...

Government to standardise on ‘open standard’ and ‘open source’ software.*

Yeah right. All the babus would have to learn to use computers once again.

Domestic IT hardware industry to be aggressively promoted to minimise dependence on imports.*

    Blah Blah...

Domestic hosting industry to be promoted to minimise international bandwith charges.*

MTNL charges 5 rupee per MB on 3G. And they are talking about cheap domestic servers.

An independent body, Digital Security Agency (DSA), to be set up for cyber warfare, cyber counter-terrorism, and cyber security of national digital assets.

At least they are not promising color TV sets for SC/ST and muslims to buy their votes. We must appreciate that they have the vision.

When BJP came to power last time around, I was paying Rs. 16 per minute for cellphone calls. When they were voted out about 4 years later, I was paying 40 Paise per minute for my cellphone usage on reliance. This is because BJP broke the monopoly of Airtel and Hutch by giving licenses to new operators like Reliance, MTNL/BSNL etc.

So, there is a reason to believe that monopoly of Airtel can be broken if a government so desires. Monopoly of Airtel on business broadband must end for us to get reasonably priced and reliable broadband connections.

most of what you are saying was to happen irrespective of the party at the center.

trai has done its job when it comes to telecom no matter which government exist at the center.

i have high hopes from LK Advani. especially compared to the alternatives we have.

there is a realistic chance of mayawati becoming the PM this time around.

i would have to look at the possibilities of deporting myself out of the country if that happens.
