i think that can be done through synaptics.

i remember reading a post on digg that they are working on a new protocol that would enable people to install software by clicking a link on a web page.

that link would run synaptics and install the app for the user.

well it actually makes things easy in my opinion. in windows u wud have to go to website and then download and then run the installer.

for fedora the similar command is called yum

oh yeah. i love linux for its single point installer and software manager.

no need to download to install or update software.

suse has something like that already i think

it does make it easy but these links should only work from the distro's own website

the point remains. not all applications ship with an update checker.

so most users are stuck with previous edition of software which might have bugs...

though most popular applications now automatically check for updates.

that solves the problem for most users.

firefox, opera, messengers... good thing they tell the user a new update is available when it is.

@sushubh: there is apt-url which is already there in ubuntu i think (not sure if it was there before or just came in hardy).

@banda: dvdrip is a GUI frontend to a bunch of command line utils which i posted a link in post # 9 above... didnt work for me...

The AptURL Protocol Handler in Ubuntu 7.10 | Tombuntu

Ya openSUSE 10.3's 1-click install was good, the first I guess...

I hope the package management system is fast in openSUSE 11, coz I am planning to go back to openSUSE/KDE3...

Currently downloading openSUSE/GNOME 11 Beta1 x86_64 Live CD... KDE3 is only available in the DVD so will start the download of Beta2 which is due on May 2nd
