Netfirms hosting is crap after 11pm Indian time pages don't open with time out error. Try anyone else except netfirms if you are serious in your plans.
I need a legal vBulletin hosting company,
Right now I'm planning to go ahead with phpBB and later upgrade to vBulletin as $160 is kinda too much money for spending on a Forum. So I need hosts that provide vBulletin that is legal. I'm going to host a fansite. Well initially this site is going to be very very small with about 100 users and about 5 to 10 users browsing a day. So the load on the network or the server would not be much. Yes, you're right I want the plan to be equal to or less than Rs.200/month. I'm planning to buy an account from Netfirms. What do you guyz say?
I don't know much about forum software, can someone fill me in on the features that vBulletin has but phpBB does not...
i know only one thing about phpBB... that it is one of the most hacked forum applications available online. it gets way too many patches and you have to keep working hard by keeping on installing the new updates.
it also lacked support for cascaded forums i think recently. not sure about now. but none of the guys i talked to who run damn popular forums are comfortable with the idea of using phpbb.
mozilla forums are the only popular phpbb forum i have seen.![]()
btw. for a small discussion forum solution. i would recommend using bbpress. it's simple and it works. and it is being developed at a rapid pace. upgrades are easy. and speed is awesome.
here are the list of features which are not there in version 2.x.x but have been added in version 3 which is still undergoing beta testing. this should give you an idea on what was/is missing in phpbb :p

Looks like phpBB can use more developers.
Was curious since most forums that I visit are in DB / BI space and they run phpBB (e.g. http://www.forumtopics.com/busobj/index.php). Maybe developers are biased towards Open Source.
of course. the reason i believe mozilla also uses phpbb. smf and bbpress are other two open source solutions... but for most shifting to another software solution could result in bigger problems. i am still getting a lot of visitors to the links on the old forum pages...
I have to disagree with this, it's upto the admin to keep their forum software upto date, if they are lazy to update then they have to face the consequences. The first version of phpBB 2.0.x was released on april 2002 so 22 updates in 60 months, which I don't call it as too many
smf is not open source, it's just a freeware.

that does not mean that you give me a software which is so prone to hacking. do some decent beta testing. get the damn thing fixed before releasing it for public consumption.I have to disagree with this, it's upto the admin to keep their forum software upto date, if they are lazy to update then they have to face the consequences.
take wordpress for example. it has seen its share of vulnerabilities. but overall the product is pretty darn secure.
good point about SMF. bbpress and phpbb are two of open source bb applications. punbb was supposed to be another good one. but its dead now i guess?
